Obituary for Gertrude H. Baker

Gertrude Hourigan Baker, 91, of Danville, passed away January 8, 2018 at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born on October 22, 1926 to the late Samuel T. and Mattie Powar Hourigan. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, DeWayne Baker.

Born and raised in Lebanon, Kentucky, Gertrude had a long and fulfilling life. Upon meeting her late husband, DeWayne, she settled and lived the remainder of her journey in Danville, Kentucky. Family was the most important thing in her life. She never met a stranger and made everyone feel as if they were family. Gertrude loved her family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more than anything in this world. Gertrude shared a very strong bond with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Through this bond, she became the hardworking, compassionate, loving, honest, dependable, and spunky woman that everyone knew her to be. Gertrude took all of these traits and values and used them throughout her life in her job at Hub Frankel, her membership at First Baptist Church, in her volunteer services as an auxiliary member at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, and most importantly, as a mother. In her off time, Gertrude loved playing bridge with her group of friends, riding her tricycle around her neighborhood, and square dancing with the group she’s a part of called the “Constitution Squares” in multiple cities around Kentucky. She was an also an avid seamstress for “The Sewing Grannie’s” in which she was able to produce numerous of dresses and pants to send overseas to Guatemala by her beloved granddaughter Kaitlyn Bryant on a mission trip to the country along with other countries. To know Gertrude Baker was to love her. She was a role model not only to her family, but to everyone she met and interacted with. She loved life and lived every single minute of it to the fullest. She truly was the complete definition of a Christian woman who loved Jesus, her family, and living life. Gertrude Baker will always be remembered in the hearts and minds of those that loved her and those that called her a friend. May she rest in peace.

She is survived by two sons, James T. Baker of Danville and Gary DeWayne Baker (Kathy Davis Baker) of Bowling Green; two daughters, Gwen Baker Boling (John M. Boling) of Elizabethtown and Phyllis Baker Bryant (Darrell Bryant) of Danville; a sister, Carol Joyce Becker of Danville; twelve grandchildren: Rebecca Anne Lynch, Barbara Jeanne Baker Cooley, James T. Baker, Stephanie Michelle Ridge, Brian Baker Lamar, J. Matthew Boling, Sarah Elizabeth Boling, Christopher DeWayne Baker, Nathan Davis Baker, Jason S. Bryant, Jacob D. Bryant, and Kaitlyn R. Bryant; and twelve great-grandchildren: Abby Cooley, Ashaley Cooley, Kristofer Baker, Savannah Baker, Ty Noland, Sara Ridge, Jasamine Ridge, Makenna Baker, Johnny Sarabia, Kiersten S. Bryant, Kyler S. Bryant, and K. Sawyer Bryant.
