Mildred Hurt

Mildred Elizabeth Cox Hurt, wife of John, mother to Christopher (Sarah), beloved Gramma to Alexander, Henry, Ian and Owen; cherished sister and Aunt Mid to so many. She was born June 12, 1941 in Knoxville, Tennessee and died May 24, 2019 in Danville, Kentucky.

Mildred attended Hiwassee College, The Salvation Army School for Officer Training and the University of Tennessee. She served as an officer in The Salvation Army in Atlanta, Georgia and later as a teacher in her native Knoxville. She was passionate about teaching and cared deeply for her students, many of whom she remembered with smiles and laughter decades later. 

She later worked for The Salvation Army in Knoxville and then Danville, as well as at First Christian Church in Danville.

Mildred's heart belonged to God. She loved to sing hymns, though she would have told you that her sister Nita had the prettier voice. She was a thoughtful and sincere Christian, and was dedicated to living life in accordance with the scriptures. She loved to make others happy by feeding them, especially with desserts. She made the best peanut butter fudge and banana pudding; and most of all she loved taking care of her grandsons. She hated seeing them upset or in trouble.

Mildred was preceded in death by her mother, sister, and two nephews. She is survived by a loving family including her husband, son and daughter- in-law, four grandsons, two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be 1PM Friday, May 31, 2019 at Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home with Dr.Tim Mathis officiating. Visitation will be from 12pm-1pm Friday.
