Betty Monroe Obituary

Betty Jean Monroe, 81, passed peacefully on January 17, 2026, in the comfort of her home in Danville, Kentucky, surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life. She was born on September 17, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Andrew and Betty White, who preceded her in death.

Betty was the heart of her family and the steady presence that made every place feel like home. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Charles “Gerry” Monroe, to whom she was married for 63 beautiful years.  She was a deeply loving mother to her children, Renee Monroe and Michael Monroe. Her joy multiplied when she became a grandmother to Lilly Monroe and Griffin Monroe, and later a great-grandmother to Bailee Brooks.  She is also survived by her dear sister, Joanna Medland, along with many extended family members and loved ones who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

A woman of many roles, Betty was proudest of being a wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She spent many years as a devoted stay-at-home mother before beginning a long and respected career at Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky, where she served as a Resident Pari-Mutuel for 25 years. Her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and unmistakable wit left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike.

Betty had a lifelong passion for horses, a love that perfectly matched her years at Keeneland. She delighted in travel, treasured a good book, and found comfort and joy in music, often crooning along to everything from classic show tunes to timeless classical pieces. Her home was filled with warmth, stories, and the familiar sound of her voice.

Her Christian faith was central to her life. Betty read the Bible cover to cover and believed deeply that faith was found within its pages. She lived that faith daily—through kindness, generosity, perseverance, and an extraordinary love for her family.

Those who knew Betty will remember her tenacity, quick wit, and her gift for laughter. She had a way of leaving people smiling, often punctuated by her well-known sayings, such as “Funny thing about a pelican…” or her ever-practical reminder, “Read the directions!” These moments, small and shared, now live on as treasured memories.

Betty’s life was one well lived—rich with love, faith, humor, and devotion. Though her passing leaves a profound void, her legacy continues through the family she cherished and the countless lives she touched.

Visitation and service details will be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heritage Hospice, Danville, Kentucky, in honor of Betty’s life and compassionate spirit.

Betty Jean Monroe was a shining light—one that will never fade, but instead live on in love, laughter, and remembrance.
