Bradford Hanlon Obituary

Bradford John Hanlon, born August 7, 1946 at Norwalk Hospital, passed away peacefully at the age of 79, surrounded by family.

Brad was a 1966 graduate of Darien High School and the beloved son of the late John Patrick Hanlon and Myrtle Louise Bradford Hanlon. He lived a life defined by determination, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. He worked as a builder with the Louis E. Lee Company of New Canaan, where one of his many accomplishments was the renovation of the Glass House of renowned architect Philip Johnson. He was later employed as Deputy Building Official for the City of Norwalk code enforcement department.

Brad shared 51 years of marriage with his cherished wife, Sally, whose presence remained a guiding part of his life even after her unexpected passing. In retirement, they made their home in a cabin in South Newfane, Vermont, where they enjoyed the quiet beauty of nature before eventually returning to Connecticut to be closer to family and to enjoy milder winters.

Brad found immense joy in the outdoors—canoeing, fly fishing, snowmobiling, and simply spending time in nature. He built several cedar strip canoes by hand, generously giving some as gifts over the years. He also found much happiness in music, especially country western and the songs of John Denver, Randy Travis, and Glen Campbell, just to name a few.

A devoted and hands-on father, Brad was always present in his children’s lives, coaching their sports teams and participating in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. He took great pride in his three grandchildren and was a constant source of support, encouragement, and love throughout their lives. The family were members of Norwalk United Methodist Church.

A bit later in life, Brad fostered an interest in healthy cooking and holistic living, taking classes and exploring naturopathic approaches to well-being. He would prepare vegetarian meals for the family, but his true masterpieces were his sourdough pancakes, a favorite tradition remembered by all who tasted them.

Brad’s steady disposition, gentle demeanor, and infectious sense of humor, which he shared so freely with those around him, will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Lori Haggerty, and her husband, John Haggerty, of Danville, Kentucky; his son, Jason Hanlon, of Stamford, Connecticut; his grandsons, John Haggerty (Samantha); Bradford Haggerty; his granddaughter, Samantha Haggerty; and his sister, Jaye Faries, as well as nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Pruitt Spurlin of Danville. A graveside memorial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk at 1:00 PM on Friday April 17.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brad’s memory to Trout Unlimited or The Nature Conservancy.
