Mildred “Evona” Stafford, 90, of Boyle County, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2025 at her home. She was born in Casey County, Kentucky to the late Paul and Ada Cochran Vanoy. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Everett Stafford.
Evona was a master seamstress and she sewed the love of Jesus into every aspect of her life. Her cooking rivaled her sewing and it was probably her favorite way to love others. Tens of thousands of homemade meals, each one made with the same care. Whether it was from-scratch biscuits and chocolate gravy or her famous mashed potatoes and chicken n' dumplings... From chocolate pie to canned goods and too many casseroles to mention - all of it was made with love. She loved to sing. Her home was filled with the sound of her singing and whistling as she went about her work. She whistled while refusing everybody’s offer to help clean up after supper. She sang while canning the fresh vegetables from the garden. She loved her garden. She loved picking weeds if you can believe that. She couldn't pass one up and she sang then too! And of course she loved singing in the choir. She served in the church her entire life and deeply cared for so many with her strong faith and gentle spirit. Many have described Evona as the sweetest and kindest person they’ve ever met. Well, who you met is who she was. Every moment of every day, Evona was that person. She only had one side and it was because of her love for Christ. No one who knew her ever had to doubt her love for them; certainly not her family.
Evona loved deeply and she was a loving and faithful wife to Everett. She spoiled and served her husband unconditionally for 72 years. Today we celebrate Evona’s life, and let us all remember to sew the love of Jesus into all aspects of our lives - Evona’s legacy!
Evona is survived by a son, Kirby Stafford (Melinda) of Danville; a daughter, Paulette Stamper (Jake) of Harrodsburg; one grandchild, Scott Stafford (Courtney) of Frankfort; and two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Millie Moon Stafford.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Jean Johnson.
Funeral services will be held 12:30pm Friday, October 24, 2025 at Hedgeville Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Wilson and Bro. Jonathan Grizzell officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30am-12:30pm. A private family burial will follow.
