John Gayer Obituary

John George Gayer, 91, of Danville, Kentucky passed away on August 23, 2023 at VA Lexington Health Care. He was born on July 4, 1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late Glen and Anna (Ferreira) Von Gayer.


John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for four years. He loved basketball, baseball, and football. John also enjoyed animals as evidenced by his love for dogs, birdwatching and horse racing. He was a member of the Boyle County Senior Citizens Center, where he enjoyed spending time. John was a faithful member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.


John is preceded in death by siblings, Nelson "Sonny" Gayer, Mary Gayer (toddler), Margaret Soucie, Agnes Gouveia, Caroline Bowermaster, Matilda “Grace” Kramer, Madeline Alexander, and Augustine “Dickie” Ahuna  and a longtime friend, Frank Bryan.


Surviving are nieces, Susan Knight (Dave) of Danville, Kentucky and Janice Carreira (Marino) of Kaneohe, Hawaii and numerous other nieces and nephews.


A memorial service will be held 11am September 20, 2023 at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe with full military honors.
