Leon Gooch Obituary

Edward Leon Gooch, 89, of Danville, passed away January 2, 2024 at UK Hospital in Lexington. Kentucky. He was born July 30, 1934 in Lincoln County, Kentucky to the late Samuel and Ethel Goode Gooch. Leon is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Gladys Bowman Gooch, who he called “Mama”.

Leon has been a pilar in our Danville-Boyle County community for many years. He loved being involved in many activities and organizations, always with a smile and grateful personality. He retired from First Christian Church, a job he held for 39 years and was also custodian at Danville High School for 17 years. Leon worked for Preston Pruitt Funeral Home for many years, as well as Stuart Powell Ford and Kentucky State Hospital. Leon and Gladys enjoyed always helping a friend who lived in the community, by driving her around town and traveling to several different states. In 1983, the Capt. Of the USS Luce DDG-38 allowed him to stear the ship, one of the last civilians allowed this honor. He received a special community service award, Soul of 2nd Street, was a Honorary KY Colonel and was active in The Loyal Benevolent Society No. 3 of East Burgin Kentucky. He was a family man, who adored his family and loved his churches, Jacobs Chapel Methodist Church, Turnersville Baptist Church and Little Zion Baptist Church.

Leon is survived by three sons, Steve “Tony” Bowman of Lexington, Richard Gooch (Billie Goldsmith) of Lexington, Keith Gooch (Catherine) of Jacksonville, FL; a daughter, Henrietta “Penny” Short (late Chris Short) of Harrodsburg; six grandchildren, Bridget Brown (James) of Lexington, LaChrista Ellis of Harrodsburg, Christopher Simpson (Ceri) of Louisville, KY, Keith Gooch II of Langley, VA, Bridget Gooch of Jacksonville, FL, Rebecca Moore of Macclenny, FL; eight great-grandchildren, Wynema, Ellis, Whitley, Khalil, Sydney, Aaliyah, King, and Dallas; and a host of nieces, nephews , family and friends.

Leon was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian Marie Bowman; grandchild, Kimberly Renee Bowman; four brothers Robert Lee, Frank, James, and Samuel Gooch; and one sister, Lucille Gooch Meaux.

Funeral services will be held 2pm Saturday, January 6, 2024 at First Christian Church-Danville with Rev. Barry Bowman and Rev. Phillip Yates officiating. Visitation will be from 12-2pm at the church.

Pallbearers are James Brown, Ellis Brown, Keith Gooch, Keith Gooch II, Christopher Simpson, and Isiah Screetch.

Honorary Pallbearers are Craig McKitric, Terry Dunn, Wayne Wilkinson, Richard Caldwell Sr., Sidicat Dunn, and John T. Linton, Billy and Cindy Latham, King Brown, Tommy Gooch, and King Pruitt.
